About DialysisCenterUSA
Why this site exists
Roughly 500,000 Americans depend on dialysis to stay alive while they wait for a kidney transplant. They go to a clinic three times a week, every week, for years. The stakes could not be higher.
Two companies — DaVita and Fresenius Medical Care — control over two-thirds of the approximately 6,700 dialysis facilities in the United States, accounting for roughly 90% of the industry's $25 billion in annual revenue. Together, they have paid more than $1 billion in settlements and fines over the past decade. The FTC has opened investigations. The US Senate has held hearings. CBS News has run investigations. JAMA has published peer-reviewed studies confirming what patients and advocates have long suspected: when these companies acquire independent clinics, patient outcomes tend to worsen and transplant referral rates drop.
DialysisCenterUSA was built to give patients, families, and advocates a neutral tool for comparing dialysis facilities using the government's own data — without the filter of the companies that profit from keeping patients on dialysis.
What the data includes
- CMS Star Ratings — Overall quality of patient care rating (1–5 stars), patient survival, hospitalization, and infection component scores
- Patient survival — Standardized mortality ratio (SMR) compared to the national expected rate
- Bloodstream infections — Standardized infection ratio (SIR) for catheter-related bloodstream infections
- Transplant referrals — Percentage of patients referred for kidney transplant evaluation and placed on the waitlist
- Vascular access — Fistula and catheter usage rates — higher catheter usage correlates with higher infection risk
- Chain ownership — Whether a facility is owned by DaVita, Fresenius, or operates independently
- Inspection citations — Deficiencies found during CMS health inspections
How we update
CMS updates the Dialysis Facility Compare dataset quarterly. We import the latest data after each release, so quality ratings, patient outcomes, and inspection citations are never more than 90 days old.
What we don't do
- Accept money from DaVita, Fresenius, or any dialysis chain operator
- Sell "featured" placement that influences search ranking
- Hide poor star ratings, infection data, or mortality ratios
- Suppress transplant referral rates or chain ownership information
- Require facilities to "claim" a listing in order to appear in results
For dialysis facility operators
If you operate a listed facility and want to add your website, update contact information, or respond publicly to your CMS data, you can do so through our Facility Portal. Claiming a profile does not affect your CMS rating or ranking — those are determined solely by government data.
About the Founder
Abdullah Orani created DialysisCenterUSA after a family member started dialysis treatment and he realized how hard it was to compare facilities on quality — not just convenience. The government data existed, but it was buried in CMS spreadsheets that no ordinary family could interpret. He built this tool to give patients and caregivers access to unbiased, data-driven facility comparisons without the filter of companies that profit from keeping patients on dialysis.
